Local Wellness Committee Launches Farm-to-Table Farmers Market Experience for Scholars on Final Day of Wellness Week

The Butler Academy Local Wellness Committee is excited to announce the launch of an innovative farmers market experience for scholars on the final day of Wellness Week. This unique initiative transforms the traditional market visit into a dynamic, educational, and delicious farm-to-table event that brings fresh produce and new culinary adventures right to our scholars’ fingertips.

Engaging, Hands-On Learning
As part of the event, scholars were given funds to “shop” at the market, selecting an array of fresh fruits and vegetables sourced directly from local farmers. The highlight of the day saw students sampling a specially crafted strawberry vinaigrette salad—a vibrant, flavorful dish that sparks curiosity about healthy eating and nutrition. Additionally, participants received recipes tailored to the fruits and vegetables they purchased, offering practical ideas on how to incorporate seasonal produce into everyday meals.

A Collaborative Experience with Chartwells
The success of the farmers market is the result of Butler Academy’s close partnership with Chartwells. Carlie Lewis, Butler Academy’s Operations Specialist, collaborated with Chartwells to bring the wellness experience to life—creating an engaging initiative that nourished not only the body, but also the mind.

Brandon Lewis, Area Director for Chartwells, emphasized the importance of this initiative:

“We’ve done this a few times, and every kid doesn’t get the opportunity to go to a farmers market, so this is a fun way to bring it to them. We are so far removed from where our food comes from, and this is a great way to educate children.”

Lorenzo Fleming, Assistant Director at Chartwells, further explained the event’s appeal:

“It’s fresh produce and it’s self-serve—just like a real farmers market. Fresh and in season. Free samples get children involved in trying things.”

Empowering Healthy Choices
This interactive experience not only introduces scholars to the origins of their food but also encourages them to embrace healthier eating habits. By providing an environment where students can explore, taste, and learn about various fruits and vegetables, the Local Wellness Committee is fostering a deeper understanding of nutrition and self-care.

A Fitting Finale to Wellness Week
The farmers market event marks a celebratory finale to Wellness Week at Butler Academy. It stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to promoting wellness through creative, engaging, and educational experiences. With a focus on real-world learning and healthy lifestyle choices, the event has set the stage for many future initiatives that bridge the gap between the classroom, the community, and the field of nutrition.
