Leadership

Dr. Reyes’s personal commitment to his community and dedication to equity in education has formed the basis for the idea behind Butler Academy. His collaboration with community leaders to create a school that serves the needs of Darlington County families has generated the necessary momentum to bring this compelling vision to fruition.

Dr. Jerome Reyes, Butler Academy Co-Founder and President

As a person who has lived my life always making sure everyone is heard and feels included, our core value of Belonging resonates with me the most. I find that being a part of a community is life-giving and I want everyone to have that experience, especially those who have been marginalized.

EXCELLENCE, our fifth core value, resonates with me because it embodies what I strive to contribute to the BA family. Each day, I make a commitment to provide exemplary service to all stakeholders, including teachers, staff, scholars, parents, and the surrounding community.

A core value that resonants with me, in particular, is that it's important to remember a child whose behavior is creating issues is not trying to cause a problem, but rather, looking for a way to solve one. Oftentimes, children with academic challenges are using behavior to speak their frustrations. Butler Academy aims to make sure we are proactive in our strategies versus reactive.

Creating an environment of belonging is the reason I chose BA. When we feel like we belong, we become more successful in meeting our goals for both our staff and students. A sense of belonging in school allows students to feel respected, accepted, and supported by their teachers and peers. I chose Butler Academy for me and my child for this reason. I am excited to be a part of this amazing school.

I was drawn to Butler Academy because of the school's desire to focus on the complete well-being of its scholars. BA is not only committed to developing outstanding learners but scholars with social/emotional skills that make them strong forces for their families and our community. The core value that resonates most with me is Respect because it reminds all of us to see the good in others, to value the abilities of others, and to appreciate people for who they are and what they bring to the BA family.

I was drawn to Butler Academy because of its dedication to ensuring that all students are given an equal opportunity to succeed through individualized instruction, multiple learning strategies, and positive feedback to help them develop successful learning approaches and confidence in their ability to succeed. As a child, school was often a struggle for me, therefore, I closely identify with giving students that extra boost to help them become productive learners.

I was drawn to Butler Academy because of its commitment and passion for bringing equity into the classroom. On top of that, BA emphasizes how important is it to value the social and emotional well-being of its students. I want to be here because Butler Academy is the future of education. The BRAVE core value resonates with me most because it's about belonging which focuses on community. It is essential for scholars to be part of a community and to learn to work with one another.

If I had to choose just one of our core values, it would be respect. Respect at BA refers to respect for oneself and respect for others. Treating others with kindness (respect for others) and honoring our bodies and minds (respect for oneself) is a natural progression to success in the other four core value areas.
